About This Course:
A Newbie's Guide to Building a Self-Hosted Blog or Website

Are you ready to invest in a website (or blog) but don't know where to start?

This "WordPress for Beginners" workshop will help you learn the first steps of creating a website (and/or blog)—that you'll own—using WordPress and other Internet resources.

NOTE: This class has not been updated since 2014, and due to being out-of-date, Jami has not offered it for sale for many years. However, as many tips and insights remain valid, she decided to offer it free to members. Just keep in mind that some details about how WordPress menus or options work (or appear) will be out of date, so get what you can out of it and ignore the rest.

This class is for beginners, and is intended for students with no knowledge of WordPress (or of creating websites and blogs at all!). Students will receive a handout and access to a private webpage with additional tips and instruction. At the end of this class, students will have an overview of WordPress, know how to set up a basic website, and even know how to add a blog.

We'll cover the following steps:

  • Deciding on website goals,
  • Organizing information for a set of pages: about me, books, contact, etc.,
  • Deciding on a hosting company,
  • Choosing a Word Press theme and style,
  • Creating static Word Press pages, and
  • Creating and populating a blog page.
Not sure whether you want a free website and blog (covered in a different class) or are ready to invest in a site you'll own (covered in this class)? Read this post for tips on how to decide which is a better match for your situation. Or check out the whole series Jami did on WordPress and websites. These two website classes are very similar (just set up for free vs. paid), so you only need to study one of these classes, not both.

Thrive Themes - Make More Sales Without Needing More Traffic

After escaping the corporate asylum by leaving a clone in her place, Jami Gold unlocked her creativity and became an award-winning novelist. To help other writers reach their potential as well, she offers a huge collection of writing resources on her site.  She's blogged on the WordPress platform for over a decade, even teaching herself coding to customize settings on her site. But for this course, her most important skill is in translating gobbledygook into English (i.e., explaining technical topics to the non-technical).
